5 Tricks to Stop your Dog Chewing

by Craig Clemins

Puppies are little rascals at the best of times. They mess up the house, destroy your belonging and chew the furniture to shreds. This article will show you in 5 easy steps how you can stop your puppy from chewing.

Firstly, get your puppy to the vet for a check up if she hasn't had one recently. We need to make sure there are no medical conditions making her need to chew.

Chewing is natural, but you need to decide what is acceptable and what isn't. Puppies chew as a form of learning (just like human babies) so it shouldn't be banned totally. Apart from just protecting your house, you also need to teach dogs what they can't chew because of dangers in chewing - such as electric cables etc.

The "No" command is the easiest thing you can use to teach your dog what can and can't be chewed on. Tell your dog "No" in a firm way anytime it starts to chew on something it shouldn't be. Then remove the item from the dog in a slow but authoritative manner. If your puppy resist, squirt water in its face and then take the object.

As you approach the dog to remove the item it's chewing, do it in a slow controlled manner. If you move too quickly your dog may get the wrong idea and thing you are playing. If the object is fixed, or large, try spraying some bitter apple chew deterrent to stop the chewing.

Don't outlaw chewing entirely. Let your dog chew on items such as chew toys and bones, encourage your dog to chew these.

A word of caution, some puppies and dogs may react aggressively when you try to remove their latest "chew toy' - so act with caution to avoid a violent reaction.

The 5 suggestions I've mentioned above work extremely well when combined with a little patience and consistency. Give your dog a chance to learn these and your chewing problems will be over for good.
